The CarbonFix Standard was launched in 2007 with input from a wide range of industry experts. It is already renowned for certifying high quality forestry carbon offset credits with substantial biodiversity and sustainability benefits. In particular smaller and midsize forestry offset projects are using CarbonFix, this is due to its simple and high-quality framework criteria. With the acceptance of CarbonFix, these projects can now expand their access to carbon finance through the network of the ICROA members.
ICROA selected CarbonFix for inclusion in the ICROA Code of Best Practice [the ICROA Code] because CarbonFix credits meet ICROA’s strict criteria for offsets. According to the ICROA Code, offset credits need to be real, independently verified, permanent and additional and be tracked in an independent registry. All ICROA members sign up to the ICROA Code, the world’s only self-regulating policy mechanism for the voluntary carbon market, which includes stringent rules for how members provide their carbon footprinting, greenhouse gas reduction advice and offset services.
Edward Hanrahan, ICROA co-chair said, “We selected the CarbonFix Standard for inclusion in the ICROA Code because CarbonFix offset credits are environmentally robust, highly innovative and focus on biodiversity and sustainability. These qualities provide ICROA members with another offset certification standard that ensures that the end customer has confidence that their carbon offsets are real, permanent and additional.”
Commenting on the decision to include the CarbonFix Standard in the ICROA Code, Pieter van Midwoud from the CarbonFix secretariat said “We are delighted that CarbonFix has been recognised as a high quality offset standard by ICROA. Through its members’ commitment to the ICROA Code of Best Practice, ICROA has been instrumental in ensuring that high quality offsets become the norm in the voluntary carbon market. “
Other offset standards may be included in subsequent versions of the ICROA Code, provided that they meet ICROA’s strict criteria for offsets.
